Easter Holidays

New Zealand takes Easter seriously. It's a 4 day weekend and all grocery stores in the country are closed for two days of the weekend. There is much grumbling from adults about the easter bunny being so omnipresent.

With the long weekend off, we were invited to a friends' bach up the coast. It was only an hour to get there but just as we left, the screeching noise in our brakes, that we had an appt. for when we were to return, reached an uncomfortable pitch. So we returned home, borrowed our friend's car and repacked everything (including 3 bikes) in the spare vehicle.

Take two...The Dixons bach is a family holiday home on Miriam's side of the family. It's in a semi remote part of the coast, where there is no city water. All the water we use at the house is collected rainwater.  It has a wide open landscape and feels a bit wild. It's flat so we could go on long bike rides.

Everyone on bikes!

A kiwi tradition at Easter is to make/eat hot cross buns. Miriam made some from scratch which requires a triple rise! Such amazing bakers here...She let the girls make the crosses.

Lots of delicious meals around this little table.

The short walk to the pine forest has a long swing

Wren and Onyx are besties.

We walked to the dunes and took the plunge on boogie boards. Next best thing to sledding!

Easter Sunday we had made a treasure hunt for the kids that ended with a chocolate bunny in the caravan (Kiwi campervan) out back.
