Trapping
A few weeks into lockdown I realized why New Zealand has been so good at eradicating Covid19 from the country. Apart from having a compassionate, well reasoned leader who gives weight to scientific expertise...
Eradicating Covid is like eradicating non-native predators and New Zealand is in the process of doing both. The national goal is to be predator free by 2050. To trap predators (or Covid) out of existence takes everyone working together and constant vigilance.
The end of my field season was cut short by the lockdown and now we are into winter, when lizards are dormant. So I decided to take the opportunity to start up some conservation projects I would not have time for if I was working--starting a predator trap line along Åwhiro stream, and a lizard garden at the school. Both go hand in hand.
Eugene runs the trapping group along the coast and was kind enough to train up my volunteers.
Trap training with the new recruits.
