Cathedral Cave
For the last few nights we headed to Curio Bay. We woke up early to catch the low tide at Cathedral Cave, on the way to Curio Bay. It is only safe to enter the sea cave two hours before low tide and up to an hour after low tide--otherwise it's filled with the ocean. On this day, the storm surge made even that time frame questionable. With the low tide at 8am and a drive from Surat Bay, we had to hurry on the 1/2 hour hike down to the beach.
Our early morning windswept walk to the cave
Our early morning windswept walk to the cave
Just as we were arriving at the cliff face we saw a big wave wash right up to it, nearly trapping the couple walking by. So we took off our shoes in case of another big wave.
The cave entrance
It gets darker and darker in the cave until you aren't sure if you should go any further...
And then you come around the corner and it opens back out to the sea. A beautiful wonder of nature.
Just as we were starting back out a wave came in and the people who had been ahead of us all scrambled to get back inside away from the wave. It was a little hairy there at the end, trying to get out of the cave and around the cliff before another wave came in. We all thanked our lucky stars that our timing was good, getting there just at low tide, rather than after that.
