Carnival
With the use of a borrowed car we went to the downtown waterfront for the Arquitectura de feria, part of the NZ arts festival. It's a traveling carnival from Catalonia with seven fantastical hand-cranked rides built from recycled materials and scrap iron, all run on old fashioned parent-power.
The bridge to the waterfront, full of nooks and crannies for sitting and taking in the view

Random public pianos dot the city. Lucas of course played a Queen song, Bohemian Rhapsody

Dragon boat out on the water, but chanting in Maori

Lunch on the waterfront before the fair

Lucas walks the plank

The Carnival! What beautifully created crazy contraptions. Lucas powers the first ride, a merry-go-round.

Operational crocodile

Mama powered airborne merry-go-round

Even the attendants were part of the Catalonia vibe. Wren and Quinn on the sled swing.

Now for the ferris wheel. They had to balance the entire ride with free weights. So the kids each got on a scale and were assigned their weight. Wren, 19 kilos. Then they added weight to make each seat equal 45 kilos. The attendants were doing fast but hopefully accurate math.

Then the kids were strapped into this openfaced ferris wheel, sometimes sitting on an old toilet. Lucas powered this one too (at the bottom right). Wren is halfway down on the left.

At the end there is a parent relaxation ride. The parents sit in swinging chairs, listen to soft music and the kids pull a string to gently fan them. I appreciated the sentiment that, while much of the day was spent attending to the kids' desires, the parents get a little time too.

Time to head home through a wall of flags for nappy time

The carnival is headed back to Spain and Barcelona next so keep an eye out for it Ansley and Ali!

That looks awesome Jina! I would love to check it out, although I would most love to be there with you, Lucas and the girls, alas. Would you believe that at two years old, Mateo weighs 17 kilos, just 2 kilos less than Wren? He is pure Sons of Norway material! Besos
